BASIC INTENSIVE ADVOCACY TRAINING (BIAT)

The Virginia Victim Assistance Network (VVAN) and the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance (The Action Alliance) are pleased to announce open registration for a Basic Intensive Advocacy Training (BIAT).  The BIAT is a collaborative 2-day training designed for both victim-witness and sexual and domestic violence agency advocates in their first two years of advocacy work.

This training provides and overview of the role and responsibility of advocates; the guiding principles of a trauma informed response and the impact and effects of trauma on individuals; an overview of the civil and criminal justice system and tools available for effective advocacy; the importance of a collaborative response and the value of self-care and self- reflection in our work to support victims of violence.

The BIAT provides participants with the opportunity to learn about statewide resources that can support their work as well as opportunities to network and enhance relationships with others doing victim advocacy work in Virginia.

Who should attend:

Advocates in local domestic and/or sexual violence programs and advocates in victim-witness programs with less than two years of direct services to victims are encouraged to attend.  In addition, it is encouraged that advocates in the same communities attend together, as the training includes a focus on collaborative responses to better serve victims of violence.

Registration:

The cost for this training is $75.00, which includes training materials.  You can register with VVAN at the following link: vanetwork.org under the "Events" section.

Logistics:

The training will be held at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel in Staunton, Virginia.  This is a two-day training, beginning on Thursday, August 8, 2019 and ending on Friday, August 9, 2019 at 2:30 p.m.  Breakfast and lunch will be included for both days of the training.

Breakfast is from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on the first day, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m.  The training begins promptly at 9 a.m.   On the second day, breakfast will be available from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m., with the training beginning at 8:30 a.m. and concluding by 2:30 p.m.

Dress is casual, but remember that the temperature can vary in training rooms, so dressing in layers is the best option.

A certificate will be provided for advocates who attend both days of the training and all sessions.  Following completion of the training evaluation, which will be emailed to attendees after the event, your certificate will be generated and sent electronically.
