ADVANCED VICTIM ASSISTANCE ACADEMY IS OPEN FOR REGISTRATION!

The Virginia Victim Assistance Network (VVAN) is pleased to announce the dates and location of this year’s Advanced Victim Assistance Academy.  The Academy will be held August 28 - 30 at the Great Wolf Lodge, 549 E. Rochambeau Drive, Williamsburg, Virginia.  This training is sponsored by VVAN with funding provided by an OVC Training and Technical Assistance Grant. 

The topic of this Academy is:  Best Practices for Managing Difficult Cases and Assisting Victims with Complex Trauma The Academy will include challenges, strategies, and lessons learned about a variety of topics related to the impact of complex trauma and effective victim advocacy in response to variety of challenging crimes.  Training delivery will include small group activities, panel presentations, case examples, lecture, and opportunities for networking and collaboration.  The training will focus on practical skills to enhance delivery of services to crime victims, including underserved populations.

The Advanced Academy is offered once per year and is designed for experienced advocates.  Each year, the Advanced Academy focuses on a different topic(s) and crime type or victim population(s), working to hone advanced skills, aid sustainable advocacy, and enhance capacity building.

Who should attend:

This training is designed primarily for victim assistance professionals working in system-based agencies (i.e., prosecutor’s offices, law enforcement or any other government entity). Other professionals working with crime victims such as community-based advocates, mental health counselors, crisis response workers, etc., would also benefit from this training.

Registration:

The cost for this training is $75.00, which includes training materials.  This is a two-and-a-half day training, beginning on Wednesday, August 28 2019, and ending on Friday, August 30, 2019 at 12 Noon.  Breakfast will be included all three days of the training and lunch will be included on Wednesday and Thursday.

The training on August 28, 2019 will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. Please come a few minutes early to register and pick up your training materials. Training on the second day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.  The final day of training will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at Noon.  Certificates will be provided for attendees who attend all two-and-a-half days of training.

Dress is casual, but remember that the temperature can vary in training rooms, so dressing in layers is the best option.

Please note that you are responsible for your lodging costs, incidentals, and any meals not provided at this training.

Lodging: 

We have reserved a block of rooms at the Great Wolf Lodge for overnight accommodations at the government rate of $115.00, plus taxes and fees. 

To reserve a room, call the toll-free Central Registration Department at 1-866-972-9653.  Identify yourself as members of the training group, with Reservation #1908VAVIC.  The cut-off date to reserve rooms at the government rate is Friday, July 26, 2019. 

Parking:

There is no charge for parking.

Scholarships:

A limited number of scholarships to pay lodging costs may be available for those who can demonstrate a strong need for assistance.  If interested, please email Kim DiJoseph at kim.dijoseph@vanetwork.org.  

Registration will be limited to 35 participants and granted on a first come first serve basis.

This training is provided as part of an OVC Training & Technical Assistance Grant (2018-V3-GX-0090). 

No federal funding is utilized to pay for food.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION CANCELLATION AND REFUND POLICY

Requests for conference registration cancellations and refunds must be submitted in writing to Cristi Lawton at cristi.lawton@vanetwork.org no later than August 20. A $10.00 Processing fee will be assessed.  After AUGUST 20, NO REFUNDS WILL BE CONSIDERED OR ISSUED.
